The french have been very conversant with toytheatre up to the first world war. This is an example of toytheatre in a grand scale. Note that the characters are puppets. It is possible to build a proscenium for cardboard characters as big as this one. Some canadian toytheatre addicts have done this already.

At present the french toytheatre scene is not very active, except in Troyes. Mr Speaight has been recently invited to perform plays in that town.

The other side of french toytheatre is a wealth of private collectors exhibiting their wares.

French toytheatre

The imagerie Pellerin dominates the scene. In general the printers of toytheatre come from Alsace.

This image represents a proscenium of french origin. the scale means that the english sceneries won't fit.

The museum at Epinal, Vosges, France supplied some photocopies to Theatre de Salon, years ago. In general the sophistication is almost unbeattable. For characters of french design, see our other website at:

Maurice Sand, Nohant museum. His collection

This picture of the Nohant museum has been chosen for its inspirational power. These are puppets but it is possible to build toytheatre on such a scale.

In general the french are little interested about toytheatre.T hey embraced the magical lantern with too much enthusiasm and of course the film was born there with Lumiere!
